NHS Case Study: Intranet for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals
Introduction
Worcestershire Health Informatics Programme (WHIP) had identified long terms goals to deliver a comprehensive Intranet/Extranet and Internet solution to provide information for staff and the Public to manage content and information/reference material to NHS and associates. This was part of the Local implementation Strategy within worcestershire. The initial pilot was with Wyre Forest Primary CareTrust. It has since been implemented across the county.
Aim
The main aim of the project was to review and refine the following key features:
- confirm the logistics of collaboration with all partners
- gain experience and exposure of web technology
- understand the technical infrastructure requirements for a full-scale rollout
- educate and review staff responsibilities
- review management process and proceedures
- investigate the intergration of legacy systems
- performance and scalability of solutions
Brief Technical Requirements
- core technology based on MS SQL 2000, ASP, Windows 2000 and Internet information server.
- ability for non-technical users to author/edit and publish pages
- flexible workflow system, with multiple levels of approval
- pages published and withdrawn easily
- pages scheduled for publication and deletion automatically
- full audit and versioning features
- strict control of design with use of templates
- unlimited authors
- full searchable site with full indexing
- ability to implement live and staging server environment
- intergration between all sites Intranet & Extranet
Timescale
The initial pilot project was initially earmarked with a completion date of 6 months previous to Harlequin undertaking. Our deadline was to achieve planning and implementation within 8 weeks. Project to go live within 3 months, with full data migration. Soon after the go-live date the NHS with the Harlequin Project team would carry out an extensive road show to promote services within the Worcestershire Health community and partners.
Budget
The current implementation for the pilot and training was completed to a fixed budget.
